Feel the Need to Hybernate

Weather has suddenly turned cold and wet and dark the last few days. Rain for last 2 days. Ugh!  I've heard the phrase "some people carry their weather inside them"  I am definitely not one of them!  I get S.A.D. (Seasonal Affect Disorder) and really struggle when the daylight hours get shorter.  And when its cold and damp I just want to crawl into a cave and hypernate -curl up on the couch with a good book.
Along with moving less, I find I want to eat more - usually alot more. For the last few days I've been craving soup - which is much better than what I usually crave.

And all that wood I was playin' with last weekend?  Tonight is the third time I've fired up the wood stove this week  Nothing like a cheery fire in the to chase away the chill. And the blues.

But I haven't worked out since Tuesday.  Just feel like someone "pulled the plug" and drained all my energy.  I'm hoping I'll adjust to the cold over the next few days  - probably the best way is to get my butt off the couch.  Time to split wood not sit here and burn it!

  1. I'm hearing you. It's been colder and rainy here too, and it's just harder to feel motivated. If you split some wood, I'll go go do some birch presses. :)

  2. Hi Doc! Have you had your 25-hydroxy level checked lately? You might need a D3 boost. Mine was SOOOO low last winter...it was 13. It took a long time to get it up to 37, even doing 5000-10000 IUs a day for 4 months. I just had more labs pulled this past week and am hoping I have it well over 50 now. It makes a HUGE difference in SAD...and just general mood and outlook during these increasingly darkening fall days.

  3. I think even those of us not affected by SAD go through an adjustment when the seasons change. I hope you find something that helps you get through this. My guy gets pretty down in the winter time.

On to happier things - I grew up with woodstoves with I lived up north. I do love the feel of wood heat, but I do know how much work it takes to supply them. But oh, the comfort!

    Have a great weekend, Doc.

  4. I suffer to and the weather has been the same here. In fact it's raining right now. I've literally been fighting off the food demons. I just want to sit down and eat an entire pot roast with carrots and potatoes. Sigh.

  5. I know what you mean. It has been a lot colder here too. It sure makes it a lot harder to get out and do exercise. I guess I should be thankful that I am not sweating.

I haven't had a fireplace or wood stove in years. I sure miss that.

  6. I am the same way. It seems everyone I know always looks forward to the fall and winter and I dread it! I like long sunny, warm days! Even hot ones like we have here!
But soup is a good choice! So props for making that choice!
And so is exercising in the dark! (lol!)

  7. I cant imagine how it feels to have SAD. I love fall and even winter. When it gets dark early, I turn on my fireplace (gas) and light candles and wallow in my crafts and books. Oh and nothing like a pot of vegatable soup when it is cold.

Come on, get off the couch and get movin!!

  8. I have SAD too. I've noticed starting to pull into my shell this past week.

Last year I bought one of those huge light boxes. I drink my morning coffee under it and it really helped beyond measure.

I think with the wet weather and much colder temps, we're allowed to hybernate a bit while we get used to it.

  9. I think I have SAD too. I like the fall weather and all, but I need sunshine and lots of it!! I have discovered these past few years that by forcing myself to get out there and get some fresh air and exercise, even on some of these super cold winter days does always make me feel better. It's just so hard getting out that door sometimes.
And the colder the weather gets, the more I want to eat. I try to lurk near the fire and wear lots of layers so I don't get the "cold" munchies.

  10. I also suffer from SAD and tis the season for my symptoms to be surfacing. in the past two years I have been using light therapy to manage them as well as doing things like getting consistent sleep, getting in regular workouts (even when I don't feel like it), and eating healthy. Doing that seems to really help me. Prior to me working on my health and loosing the weight I have my symptoms would be out of control and I really hated the winter months. Now I just see a slight dip in my energy but my mood is much more stable. Although like you I do find myself craving soups, which is why this time of year I'm always cooking up some healthy versions. Anyway good luck with managing your symptoms this winter.
